The West Country led the way in rebuilding the tattered reputation of British food and drink with the creation 40 years ago of Taste of the West, a marketing group which now represents and promotes thousands of artisan producers and local food outlets from Gloucester to Land’s End.
A new breed of entrepreneurs has moved into the food sector, sparking a huge expansion in the range of local specialities that are now available.
The West Country was always well-known for its dairy produce, its cider and its sea food.
But there are now thousands of newly-created regional foods, many of them internationally-recognised for their excellence.
As a result shoppers have access to the finest quality local – and traceable – food products and are enjoying far healthier diets as well as supporting local businesses.

What do you get when you buy meat from a supermarket? A warm welcome? Personal service? A product which can be traced right back to the farm it came from? Value for money?
Probably not. But here at Pyne’s of Somerset we can offer all those – as our hundreds of regular customers can testify.
But it’s not only the quality our products that makes us so special. It’s also the close links we have created and maintained with local farmers since our business was set up by Phil and Beryl Pyne in 1984.
We only sell meat from animals that have been reared to the highest standard. And there’s a further advantage in our policy of local sourcing: livestock only have to travel a few miles to slaughter – and stress-free animals means better-tasting meat.

We believe we provide one of the finest selections of freshly-caught fish anywhere in this area – and if you take a look at what’s on offer we think you’ll agree. Our catches mainly come from day boats operating around Devon and Cornwall and most of what you see has arrived on the slab within hours of being landed.
